Since Matt Cassel received his own personal “Entry Denied” stamp, he has been photographing in Lebanon, particularly in the Palestinian refugee camps. Once again I am in love with these lush, poetic images…..revealing a humanity that contradicts all of our western-mediated perceptions. They break my heart, and then warm it at the same time. Why would a group of women lug photographs, videos and mixed-media installations through a war zone? To collaborate on an exhibition with eight Palestinian colleagues, the members of U.S.-based feminist artist collective 6+ carried art past countless gun-toting soldiers at West Bank military checkpoints.
