Working it Out
Underwater Microphones and Juliana Snapper
Today I started to resolve sound elements for The Trophy. I love this part! I know it will take awhile. Part of that trendy artword trajectory is learning how you tick as an artist. Someone once told me I was part social archivist/part geek. I don’t know if that’s true, but I will be accumulating sound, exploiting some technical devices, and collaborating with some family. But there is some conceptual framework in the back of my head. I will be doing a lot of recording around the 4th of July.
So I started the Google chain of events and searched for underwater microphones >> learned they were called “hydrophones,” >>> found “Aquarian Audio Products,” >>>> and was amazed to find a testimonial from an Juliana Snapper regarding her underwater opera! There is a good post about her on the art:21 blog. [Read more…] about Underwater Microphones and Juliana Snapper
Its finally Summer…and time to make work!
Ahhhh…gotta love June. Especially June in Chicago. The joy of breaking out of hibernation and finally seeing friends. Chicago summers are addictive. Then winter comes back, but I won’t think about that right now.
The final critiques are done, grades in, and I’m ready to do some traveling and art-making. In a couple days I’m going to rural Nova Scotia with my family. I’m excited to be forcibly detached from my computer and blackberry, be around some big trees, and finally learn how to fly-fish properly. (and no, I will not be bringing the fish camera, but am bringing the “real” camera for a project I’ll tell you about later)
In March I had the opportunity to escape winter and go Down South for a quick trip. My dad and I went in on a new fish surveillance camera. I did a brief test and left it at the Lake for a longer visit in July. I suspect my dad will get it out sooner. I have to figure out how the new floating dock so this video is definitely an outtake. Look closely and you’ll see some minnows. I’m just happy that the quality of the footage is still kind of crappy…..refractory…….magical.

Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale!
I will be spending the next 2 months building the project DVD and turning the English subtitles into Korean subtitles. Does anyone have any suggestions for inserting the Korean translations into the videos? I’m editing in Final Cut.
If you have any suggestions please shoot me an email.

How I operate during punishing Chicago winters
I hibernate in post-production land and keep company with the Color program from FCP Studio. Since I have very little control over the surveillance itself (which quite frankly is the beauty of it), it helps to tinker with gamma and curves. Youtube is having its way with my file compression, but I can see a big difference already. More fishing and recording this summer, editing in fall, and then hopefully installation time next winter!
